Born Dec. 28, 1923 in Brush Creek, the son of the late Irene Brady Werner and Zura Meyers Werner Saylor. Also preceded in death by his stepfather, Wilson Saylor, a brother, Clyde Eugene Werner, a stepbrother, two stepsisters and two stepnephews. Surviving are his wife of 56 1/2 years, Virginia E. (Shultz) Werner; a son, Norman L. Werner and wife Mary, South Daytona, Fla., a daughter, Marilyn L. Werner, Alexandria, Va., a brother, Merle G. Werner, Meyersdale, a half-sister, Hazel Miller, Charleston, Ill., two sisters-in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Werner was a retired Chief Quartermaster from the U.S. Navy. He attended elementary school at Sand Patch and Meyersdale High School. Later on he moved to Allison Park, and was employed at Carnegie Steel for several years. With the coming of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, having served on a destroyer, aircraft carrier, heavy cruiser, several submarines, including the U.S.S. Albacore, an experimental submarine. When not on sea duty, he was an instructor at the naval training centers in Cumberland and Baltimore. While at Baltimore, a former executive officer, Naval Aide to President Kennedy, called him to come to the White House, where he was placed in charge of the "Situation Room" as a Presidential Aide working under President Kennedy and President Johnson. Later on, he went with Central Intelligence as an aide on Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. Carl retired from the U.S. Navy, January 1963, but continued with CIA as a representative on the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon. In 1970, Carl again retired only to return to his home country. He was the owner of Laurel Forest Real Estate, Meyersdale. To further his professional knowledge, he attended Catherman's Business School, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Penn State University at Altoona Campus and numerous real estate courses and seminars. Carl was a member of Meyersdale American Legion Post 112, in Meyersdale, Meyersdale Chapter F.A.&M. 554. He was also an active dedicated and industrious Rotarian, of which he was a past president, received the Paul Harris Fellowship. He enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and tending to his fruit trees and flowers. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, Md., where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Gene Abel of Zion Lutheran Church, Meyersdale, officiating. Committal services will be held in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
