January 31, 1925 - October 24, 2008 Merle G. Werner, 83 of Meyersdale, died October 24, 2008 at his home. He was born January 31, 1925 in Glencoe, son of the late Irene Brady and Zura (Meyers) Werner. Also preceded in death by brothers, Carl Werner and Clyde Werner; step sisters, Hilda Leydig and Mary Shaffer; step brother, Merle Saylor; and half sister, Hazel Miller. He is survived by his wife, the former Pauline Garlitz; and daughter, Paulla Werner, Meyersdale. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Meyersdale where he enjoyed helping with church sponsored dinners and working with the sewing group. A veteran of the U.S. Navy WWII, serving aboard Merchant Marine ships from 1943-46. He attended Sand Patch School. He settled in the Baltimore area and worked for Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point Plant. He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting and crabbing. He was a life member of the NRA, member of the Patapsco Rifle Range, Garrett Mountaineers at the Bowler in LaVale, MD, and American Legion Post 112. Also a life member of the North American Hunting Club, and a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge #183 Patapsco, MD. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Price Funeral Home Meyersdale, where service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Frank E. Harpster III officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church Meyersdale, for the ladies sewing and quilting group. Arrangements by the William Rowe Price Funeral Home, Inc., Meyersdale.
