Whetstone, 80, of Bedford, a minister for over 37 years, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 1973, at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home in Bedford County, where he had been a patient since Nov. 1972. Born June 28, 1893, in Friends Cove, he was a son of the late Simon F. and Sarah (Koontz) Whetstone. On Aug. 1, 1918, he married the former Helen Koontz, who survives. Their marriage ceremony was performed in the Cove United Church of Christ, where he delivered the first sermon of his long years in the ministry. Rev. Whetstone attended the Biddle School of Friends Cove and after engaging in farming for several years, studied for three years at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster. He was graduated in May 1928 from Central Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. During the more than 30 years in which he was active in the ministry, he served in Clear Spring, Md.; Grace Church, Newton, N.C.; First Church, Palmerton, Pa.; New Berlin Charge, Pa.; Gladeland Charge, in Manns Choice; and in 1958 retired from Wilhelm Charge on Meyersdale RD 1. Following his retirement, he was called upon to serve once more and spent four years as pastor of Everett Yellow Creek Charge, followed by three years at Dunning Creek Charge, from which he retired in 1967. On Aug. 19, 1967, he was honored with the title of Pastor Emeritus of the former Dunning Creek Charge. He was currently a director of the Everett Cash Mutual Fire Insurance Company and an honorary director of Lake Erie Bible Conference. Surviving are his wife, Helen; two sons, Rev. Ross E. Whetstone, Nashville, Tenn.; and Clarence E. Jr., Bedford RD 4; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; also a brother, B. Frank Whetstone of Everett; and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Schauer, Coatesville, Pa.; and Mrs. Bertha Shaffer, Friends Cove, Pa. Four brothers preceded him in death. Funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon in Friends Cove United Church of Christ. Officiating clergy included Rev. Emmett Cleveland, of St. Luke's Reformed Church of Fishertown; Rev. John MacRae, Dunning Creek Church; Rev. Stephen Robertson, Friends Cove United Church of Christ; and Rev. Paul Westcoat, president of Penn West Conference of the United Church of Christ. Burial was in Friends Cove United Church of Christ Cemetery, under the direction of Roland S. Keller Funeral Home of Bedford. Meyersdale Republican, August 6, 1973 [W1050]
