Whitfield, 56, of Smoky Ridge Road, Schellsburg RD 2, died Monday, Aug. 18, 1997, at Memorial Hospital of Bedford County. He was born Sept. 1, 1940, in Bedford Township, son of Mary (Hall) Whitfield of Bedford RD 6 and the late Clifton A. Whitfield. On July 14, 1967, he married Carol Walters and she survives along with three children: Douglas A. Whitfield of Somerset; Nanette C., wife of Douglas Pittman of Boise, Idaho, and Michael J. Whitfield, at home. He is also survived by four sisters: Cora "Corkie," wife of Reon Cook of Hyndman; Lyn, wife of Robert Karns of Bedford RD 6; Faun, wife of Richard Howsare of Bedford RD 3; and Dorothy, wife of Paul "Smoke" Vensel of Bedford RD 6, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by one sister, Mary "Frankie" Martz. Mrs. Whitfield was well-known in Bedford and surrounding counties, working as a farrier and also for trimming cow hooves. He also owned and operated his own portable custom saw mill. He had served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford with the Rev. Raymond E. Short and Rev. Robert Hoover officiating. Burial, Schellsburg Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Those wishing may make contributions to the charity of their choice. Daily American, August 19, 1997 [W1123]
