Whitford Jr., 69, died Monday, Dec. 11, 1989, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md. Born in Meyersdale on Feb. 4, 1920, he was the son of the late James R. Whitford Sr. and Elizabeth M. (Shumaker) Whitford. He served as an Army staff sergeant in World War II. He was a retired self employed automobile mechanic, and had attended the Comps Church and was a social member of Oscar Jordan Post 7375, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hyndman; a life member of the Kennells Mills Sportsmen's Club; and a past member of the Hyndman Volunteer Fire Company. Survivors include three sons, James R., Whitford III, Mark A. Headley, and Shane R. Whitford, all of Hyndman; three daughters, Betty Ann Whitford, Hagerstown, Md.; Susan E. Bridges, Winchester, Va.; and Connie L. Whitford, Manns Choice RD 1; one brother, Donald Whitford, Buffalo Mills RD 1; one sister, Marian Via, Albuquerque, N. Mex.; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Friends were received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home. Services will follow in the Hyndman Cemetery. Military honors and pallbearers will be provided by Oscar Jordan VFW Post and the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. The Republic, December 14, 1989 [W1127]
