Elwood Milton Wiley, 20, son of Dewey and Lulu M. Wiley of near Grantsville, who was stationed at Fort Crook, Nebr., was drowned in Holman Sandpit, two and one-half miles north of Plattsmouth, Nebr., Sunday, July 4. The body was brought to Grantsville and funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Lutheran Church. The Rev. George E. Bowersox, the pastor, officiated. Members of the Grantsville American Legion 214, acting as pallbearers were Robert Bender, Kenneth and James Edwards, Fay Miller, Darrell Stahl, William Miller and Ray Butler. Interment was made in the Grantsville Cemetery. Wiley was born at Lamberton, Pa., January 1928, and was employed at the Carnegie Illinois Steel Mills, at Clairton, Pa., prior to entering the A.A.F., March 15, 1946, at Chanute Field, Ill. At the time of his death, he was attached to Squadron B of the 131 AFBU unit at Fort Crook, and was on furlough. Cpl. Wiley had been swimming at the pit with several companions and went under. The body was recovered two hours later. A rescue squad attempted to revive him, but their efforts proved futile. Cpl. Grant, his best friend, accompanied the body to Meyersdale, Pa., by train, Tuesday night. He was met by William Winterberg, mortician, who took the body to the home of his parents until time for the funeral services. Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, Mrs. John (Margaret) G. Lohr, and Mrs. James L. (June) Hall of Clairton, Pa., and two brothers, Dale J. Wiley also of Clairton, and Donald L. Wiley at home, and his grandmother, Mrs. M. W. Kinsinger of Grantsville. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Clairton, Pa. Meyersdale Republican, July 15, 1948
