He was born April 11, 1931 in Somerset, the son of Mason and Ada Miller Wilhelm. He married Shirley Rittenhour on June 15, 1958 in Somerset. Karl served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Charles J. Bader DD657 during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of California State Teachers College in California, Pa., and received his master's degree from Bucknell University. He taught as an industrial arts teacher and was head football coach and assistant basketball coach at Loyalsock Township High School, Williamsport, from 1958-1964. Karl was an Industrial Arts teacher at Corning Free Academy from 1964-1967. He was assistant principal of Corning-Painted Post West High School from 1967-1982 where he started the Key Club; and the Northside Blodgett Middle School from 1982-1990 where he also started a hunter safety course. He retired in 1990. Karl was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Penn Yan, N.Y.; past president of the Painted Post Kiwanis Club; a former member of the Corning Elks; a member of the NRA; the Barrington Rifle Club; the Crystal City VFW; and a third term councilman on the Wayne Town Board. Karl is survived by: his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Melanie (James) McGuire of Penn Yan; Karla (Steven) Markayze of Painted Post; and Kimberly (Donald) Glab of Gaithersburg, Md.; brother, Ray (Shirley) Wilhelm of Lady Lake, Fla.; sisters, Thelma Fontyn of Silver Spring, Md.; Lois (Frank) Pucci of Somerset; sister-in-law, Googie Wilhelm of Somerset; seven grandchildren: Emily and Kathryn McGuire; Corinne, Kendall, Kimberly and Christiana Glab; Matthew Karl Markayze; nephew, Frank Pucci of Somerset; several other nephews, nieces: Susan Fontyn of Gaithersburg, Md.; Jeannette James of Augusta, Ga.; Amy Peritsky of Rochester, N.Y.; Cindy Hauger of Somerset and Maria Pucci, of Rochester, N.Y. Karl is predeceased by his parents; a son, Maryevelyn; and a brother, Mason Wilhelm Jr. Friends may call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning, N.Y. from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Penn Yan, with the Rev. Aileen Robbins officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Penn Yan. Memorial contributions may be made to West High School for a scholarship to be set up in Karl Wilhelm's name.
