George Carlos Winslow, Jr., 67, died at his home in Somerset last Saturday evening of a heart ailment from which he had suffered for 16 years. At the time of his death he was alone in his home. His body was discovered by Harold E. Schrock, who was his landlord and had visited with him in the early afternoon. Mr. Winslow was born in Baltimore, Maryland, December 1, 1875, the son of Colonel George Carlos Winslow of Cavendish, Vt., and Henrietta Deihl Winslow of Seven Valleys, York County, Pennsylvania. His father came from one of the oldest New England families and his mother from old Pennsylvania Dutch stock. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he majored in civil engineering. For a period of time he worked for an engineering firm in Canada, and about 1910 went to Johnstown as a consulting engineer. He first came into Somerset County in 1914, an engineer for the Somerset & Johnstown street railway company. He continued to make Somerset his home until his death. For some years he was borough engineer in Somerset, and at other intervals maintained a private office as consulting engineer. During the fire, which wiped out the Balis building in Somerset, December 24, 1926, (now the site of the J. C. Penney store) he lost much valuable equipment. Several months before his death, he had been engaged to do historical research of Somerset among the old records in the courthouse. His only known living relative is a second cousin, Mrs. Julia M. Brackett of El Centro, California, who arrived in Somerset, Monday, after being apprised of her cousin's death. Meyersdale Republican, October 1, 1942
