Witt, 86, soldier and Indian fighter in early days, died Monday morning, Nov. 4, at his home in Summit Mills. He served from Aug. 8, 1883, until Aug. 7, 1888, in the U.S. Army. He was a sergeant in Capt. Max Wisendorff's Company E of the First U.S. Cavalry. Less than 10 years after Custer's Last Stand in 1876, Mr. Witt took part in the battles to free the great Northwest of hostile American Indians. Upon his return to Somerset County, he became a coal miner and rose to the position of mine foreman. He had been retired for a number of years at the time of his death. George R. Witt was born Oct. 17, 1860, in Summit Twp., a son of William G. and Martha (Ankeny) Witt. His wife, the former Mary Schrock, died about 16 years ago. Surviving are eight children: Ross S., Poland, O.; Frank E., Summit Mills; Benjamin H., Meyersdale R.D. 3; Miss Maggie E. Witt, at home; Mrs. Clarence Maust, Somerset; Mrs. Joseph Werner, Girard, O.; Mrs. William Opel, Meyersdale R.D. 1, and Mrs. Frank Firl, Summit Mills. He left 30 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was a brother of Silas G. Witt, retired school teacher of Summit Mills, and Edward G. Witt, Waterloo, Ia. He was the oldest member of the IOOF in Somerset County. Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the decedent's late home. Burial in the Lichty Cemetery, Summit Twp., under the direction of Price & Son, Meyersdale morticians. Meyersdale Republican, November 8, 1946
