WITT George Washington Witt, one of the oldest, most widely known and most highly respected citizens of Wellersburg, passed away at his home, Monday morning, April 26. His death was due to infirmities due to old age. He was born June 9, 1860, and was nearly 83 years old. He was born and lived his entire life in Wellersburg. His farm was on both sides of the Mason & Dixon line. His farm home was in the southern part of Wellersburg borough, but a good portion of his farm land was south of the state line in Allegany County, Maryland. Besides farming, he was also a long-time dealer in livestock. Many farmers in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia sold their surplus livestock to Mr. Witt, who was noted for his probity and fair-dealing. He was a man of fine physical appearance and impressive personality. He is survived by his wife, (Alice Moser Witt) who is also well advanced in years and was ill in bed at the time of her husband's death. Mr. and Mrs. Witt were the parents of eight children - five sons and three daughters - all surviving except one daughter, Edna, first wife of Ralph W. Poorbaugh, of Stonycreek Township, who died in 1936 at the age of 35. The surviving daughters are Mrs. Gertrude Delbrook, Corriganville, Md., and Mrs. Grace Weller, Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The surviving sons are Harry, Frostburg, Md.; Earl, Robert, Walter, Wellersburg, and Guy, Akron, Ohio. One brother of Mr. Witt, Levi, of Roanoke, Va., also survives. Funeral services were held in the Wellersburg Lutheran and Reformed Church at 2:30 o'clock, this (Thursday) afternoon. Rev. George R. Winters, pastor of the Reformed Church, was the officiating minister. Interment in the church cemetery with arrangements in charge of Zeigler's Funeral Service, Hyndman.
