Born March 12, 1916, in Somerset, the son of Herbert and Emma (Trimpey) Witt. Preceded in death by parents, brothers Orlo H., Edwin R. Sr. and Miles D. Witt. Survived by wife, the former Helen Ruth Saylor to whom he was married 57 years; children, Ms. Emma Witt, Germantown, Md.; James Witt and companion Patricia Pritts, both of Fairhope; grandchildren, Mrs. Eric (Michelle) Palenik, Seattle, Wash.; Mark Witt and wife Lisa; Steve Witt and wife Tanya, both of Somerset; and great-grandsons, Hunter and Jackson Witt. Member of Grace United Methodist Church. U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the North African Campaign and received numerous medals. Also a member of Lodge 358 F&AM, Allied Trades Union and VFW Post 554. He had worked as a painter for Edwin Witt Jr. Painting and Contracting, retiring in 1981. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved his cabin in the woods (Whip-Poor-Will Hunting Camp). He also loved gardening, woodworking and his cat Hopesy Pie. Friends received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, where a service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Eric Raygor officiating. Interment Husband Cemetery. Graveside military rites accorded by the Somerset County Honor Guard. Masonic service will be held 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
