(Somerset, Pa.): July 2, 1880 At his home in Wakefield, Clay county, Kansas, June 16, 1880, Henry Younkin, formerly of Addison township, in his 75th year. The deceased leaves a widow whose maiden name was Mary King, daughter of John King, who lived on what is now known as the Harnel Farm, in Turkeyfoot. Mr. Younkin was the father of 2 children, all of them grown up to maturity, 52 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He was known as one of our best citizens, commanding the respect of all who knew him. In 1874, Mr. Y. sold his farm and removed to Kansas, where the majority of his children had proceeded him in seeking Western homes. During the war, four of his sons entered the army: Moses, Alfred, Harrison and Silas. Alfred died in the service on the Western frontier. The two latter were severely wounded. Harrison, who is still a resident of Addison township, was shot entirely through the chest at the battle of Fair Oaks, his life being saved by having a silk kerchief drawn through the wound. Moses Younkin, the second son, settled in the wilds of Clay county, Kansas, in 1856, and has the honor of being the father of the first white child born in Grant township, that county. By his many daring feats and hair-breadth escapes, he became noted as a scout and Indian fighter...
