Garfield Younkin, 69, Confluence, died Saturday night, Aug. 27, at the Deshon Veterans Hospital, Butler, having been admitted there on Thursday following a paralytic stroke suffered on Monday. He was the son of the late James Dempsey and Phoebe Ann (Burkholder) Younkin, and was born May 27, 1880 in Fayette County. For the past ten years he had been retired from the teaching profession, having taught in Arizona where he lived many years. He spent the winters in that state ever since, and the summers in Confluence. Surviving him are two children, Bryce and Ruth, both of Palo Alto, Calif.; two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Grace Shannon of Connellsville, and Mrs. Victor Ausbury, Chicago, and one brother, Blaine, Confluence. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Black Funeral Home, the Rev. Harold Kinard officiating. Interment was in the Han Cemetery, Clay Run. Meyersdale Republican, September 1, 1949
