All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ WILLIS GEORGE YOUNKIN Willis George Younkin, 41, of Grantsville, a veteran of World War II, died at the Hazel McGilvery Hospital, Meyersdale, Tuesday morning, May 4, of complications, the result of injuries he received in a sawmill accident April 7, at the mill of his brother-in-law, Carl Richter, near Grantsville. Mr. Younkin was caught in the saw which severed his left arm and inflicted body bruises. He was a patient in the hospital from that time until his death. He was born in Grantsville November 15, 1907, the son of the late George and Susan Younkin. He attended the public school in Grantsville and was a member of the Lutheran Church. He entered the Army March, 1941, served four years with the 334th Airborne Medical Corps, spent 21 months overseas and was in six major battles. After he was discharged, September 9, 1945, he returned to Grantsville and took employment as a sawmill worker with Mr. Richter. He married Miss Hilda Catherine Platter, daughter of Orvan and Minnie Platter, September 7, 1948. He is survived by his wife, three sisters, Mrs. James Livingston and Mrs. Nina Patterson of Clarksville, W.Va., and Mrs. Carl Richter of Grantsville, and one brother, Floyd Younkin, Louisa, Ky. Funeral services were held at the Grantsville Lutheran Church Friday afternoon, with the Rev. George E. Bowersox, Jr., pastor, and the Rev. Ross Speicher, pastor of the Maple Glen Brethren Church officiating. Music was furnished by the church choir. Burial was in the Grantsville cemetery where full military rites were accorded him by the American Legion Post No. 214. Commander Wayne Durst was in charge. Chaplain Ray Jenkins read the burial service. Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were Floyd Younkin, Louisa, Ky., Mr. and Mrs. James Livingston, Mrs. Nina Patterson and son Donald Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kenney, all of Clarksburg, W.Va.
