In passing, he won his battle over Alzheimer's disease. He was born Dec. 30, 1932, in Somerset. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Deanna Nelson Zimmerman; his children, Heather and Nathan; his nephews, Alfred Logan and Richard Bowman and their families: and his special friend and care giver, Loda F. Leatherman. The family offers their deep appreciation to all of the care givers at Winchester House who worked together with his family and friends to build a new life for Donald during his residency. We are particularly grateful to those on the Rainbow (Fifth) and Third floors who served him daily. Dr. Zimmerman was an educator and scientist. He taught chemistry and physics in the public schools in Pennsylvania, and after obtaining his doctorate, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the University of Leicester (England), Argonne National Laboratories (Illinois) and Northwestern University. He served in the US Army Signal Corps before obtaining his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland. He then was awarded a master's degree from Pennsylvania State University and a PhD degree in Chemistry from West Virginia University. During his career, he also completed research at the University of Leicester and Argonne National Laboratories. Throughout his life, his love of learning and his explorer's spirit opened windows of opportunity for his students and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Leora Zimmerman. Visitation from 9:30 to 11 am Saturday with funeral service immediately following at Grace Lutheran Church, 501 Valley Drive, Libertyville, Ill.
