FORMER TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR MOURNED Bahan remembered for helping others By Scott Rockerfeller Press and Sun-Bulletin CHOCONUT TOWNSHIP, Pa.- 12/04/2004 Friends and family gathered Saturday to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Jospeh A. BAhan. Mr. Bahan, a former township supervisor and local business owner, died Thursday at Meadow View Senior Living Center in Montrose, Pa. He was 95 years old. Mr. Bahan was laid to rest Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Friendsville. Rudolph Mattes, a township supervisor, called Mr. Bahan not only a good friend, but also a trusted mentor. Mattes not only followed Mr. Bahan into town politics, but used to work with Mr. Bahan on his milk route, before buying it from him in the 1960's. "He taught me basically everything I know about the town, Mattes said. "And he was the one that got me going with politics." Mattes said Mr. Bahan was a sucessful politican because he spent money like it was coming out of his own pocket and worked to keep taxes low. And keeping the roads in good shape didn't hurt, either. "Back in those days, if you keep the roads in decent shape, most people were happy." he said. Mr. Bahan's milk route would take him roughly 100 miles throughout Susquehanna and Broome counties, Mattes said. In addition to his mike route, Mr. Bahan was known to pick up coal in Scranton for other farmers and make deed runs as well. "He hada good word for everybody and I don't think anyone ever had a bad work for him," Mattes siad. Mr. Bahan, who had no children is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary, and sister Margaret Keenan, both residents at the senior living center. Dave Tucker of Choconut knew Mr. Bahan for helping out on the milk route as a kid and later becoming a fellow farmer. He stayed close to him thoughtout the years. "He was just the type of guy who would do anything for anybody," Tucker said. "And he never wanted any pay for helping you out."
