December 2, 1859 The agitator.: (Wellsborough, Tioga County, Pa.): December 08 & 15, 1859 Particulars of the Execution. Charlestown, Dec. 2, 1859. The tragedy is closed. John Brown was executed this morning at a quarter past eleven o’clock, in the presence of the military, and a few citizens in the distance. He exhibited his characteristic firmness throughout, and was on the scaffold about ten minutes. He said nothing that could be heard by the press. He appeared to die easy. His body was taken down at the end of thirty minutes, and conveyed to the jail in a coffin. It will be sent to Harper’s Ferry at four o’clock this afternoon, and there delivered to his wife. Brown was conveyed to the scaffold in a furniture wagon, sitting on his coffin. He looked around calmly on the scene and the military, and walked with a firm step upon the scaffold.
