The following inscription was placed above his grave by the kindness of a brother in arms: George D. Smith First Lieut., Co. I, 45th Regiment, Pa. Volunteers Acting Assistant Adjutant General Second Brigade, First Division, Reno’s Army Corps. Killed at the Battle of Blue Ridge, Maryland, on Sunday, Sept. 14, 1862.
