I, 187th Reg’t. P. V., and entered, with his brave comrades upon the self-sacrificing life of a soldier, willing to share with them the weary march, the lonely watch, or the fierce din of battle, hoping to share with them the glory of final victory, long delayed, and dearly won, it may be, but none the less sure. But Providence ordained otherwise; and decreed him, not the victor’s wreath, but a fragrant memory in the hearts of those dearer to him than, all beside, save country. He was wounded before Petersburg, June 18, 1864, and after nine days of suffering, death released him, and be passed, we trust, to the better land. His remains were deposited near where he fell, for a season, then brought back, to the home he had left so buoyant and full of hopeful anticipations, and Dec. 20, laid to rest in hope of a final resurrection...
