Hopewell - November 1908 One of Northumberland's oldest and most esteemed citizens passed away on Wednesday morning in the person of John U. Hopewell. Born in this place on December 4, 1829, he was almost 79 years of age. Mr. Hopewell had suffered for quite a while with kidney trouble. He was last seen on our streets on election day when he cast his vote at the Town Hall. The next day he took his bed and never arose. The end came a week later-shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning. The deceased spent his entire life in town and Point township. For 30 years he conducted a dairy and lived on one of the best farms in this section, retiring a few years ago, removing to town and residing on upper Second street. In his early career he was engaged in the coal business in town. For 60 years he was a stalwart member of the M. E. Church and he conducted a church class until a few years ago. Fifty-four years ago last May Mr. Hopewell married his second wife, Miss Catherine Young, who survives him. His first wife and his second wife were sisters, the former being Miss Mary Young, who died soon after marriage. By his second wife Mr. Hopewell had 13 children, 11 of whom survive him. These are as follows: Mrs. James Smith of Sunbury, Mrs. M. E. Sanders of Scranton, Mrs. Geo Shaeffer of Selingsgrove, Mrs. William Botts, Mrs. John Hummel, Mrs. John Mertz, Mrs. Chas. In 1857 he went to Shamokin borough, where he remained for three years, engaged in running a stationary engine. Returning to his native township, he leased the farm of Michael M. Sober, his father-in-law, and conducted that property for a period of five years as a renter, in 1873 purchasing the tract which consists of 130 acres of valuable land. It is located in Irish Valley. He erected all new buildings on this farm, and the farm at present is one of the very finest in this section, due to his unremitting and intelligent care. In addition to general farming he made a specialty of dairying for about twenty-five years, selling his milk in Shamokin. Mr. Chamberlin retired from active pursuits in the spring of 1910, his son George W. taking charge of the farm. He always held the respect of his fellow citizens, and was elected school director of his township, filling that position faithfully and efficiently.
