Brown buwbrown@comcast.net July 26, 2008, 8:11 pm Complaint made before A.P. Wiliams, Justice of the Peace of Venango County, by J.M. Karns of Jackson Twp., custodian of Charles Butler, a minor. The said Charles Butler opened my trunk and bureau drawers and stole therefrom a collection of old coins. When he would go away to school he would play truant and claim upon coming home that he had been at school. Ran away from home several times. He will disobey any instructions that are given him. Not to be depended upon for the truth. He would repeatedly take books and other articles from Sunday Schools without permission, He would repeatedly stay out nights without permission and in bad company. Sarah Karns of Jackson Twp.. Charles Butler untruthful & disobedient. Sent him for berries yesterday. He stayed all day and returned without any berries. When sent on errands he will stay away all day and not do his errand. He sold his overcoat and spent the money and claimed the coat had been stolen. He is incorrigible. Mrs. G. D. Karns of Jackson Twp. deposes that Charles is incorrigible. He brought home from Presbyterian Sunday School (word omitted) that he was not allowed to remove therefrom. He would stay away all night without permission and would make up story of his whereabouts which were without foundation. He was inclined to associate with the worst company he could find. Additional Comments: Notes made upon the boy's arrival at Pennsylvania Reform School, Morganza, Pa.: Charles Butler, No. 5761, Division D. Father and mother both dead. Lives with J.M. Karns, Cooperstown, Vanango Co., Pa., is a farmer. Was sent here from the children's home. Sent here for stealing, running off and not going to school. Description: Height 4'10 3/4"; weight 90 pounds. Brown hair, hazel brown eyes, medium complexion. One vaccine mark on left arm. Age: 13 on Mar. 4, 1900. Received Sept. 29, 1899. Born: Penna. of American parentage. Methodist. 1 younger sister. Can read & write. Does not swear or use tobacco; is not intemperate. Lies & steals. Has not been arrested before.
