Helen P. Herdman, formerly of Warren, passed on Saturday October 4, 2008 in Ravenna,
Ohio at the age of 95 years. Helen was born July 18, 1913 to Ray and Teresa
Callaghan Wingard of Derry, Pennsylvania; the third of thirteen brothers and sisters
and the first in the family to graduate from high school with the Class of 1931.
Helen married James "Red" Herdman Sr. of Johnstown, Pennsylvania on January 26, 1934
and they moved to the Warren area to make their home and raise their family of four
children: James Jr., Jerry, Gary and Mary Jo all of whom survive. "Red" preceded her
in death on September 8, 1995.
Helen, known to her large extended family as "Nana", found comfort and strength in
her Catholic faith and frequently offered Hail Marys to those she knew facing
challenges. She greatly enjoyed the company of friends and family, working
complicated crossword puzzles, reading mystery novels, beating everyone at cards and
Scrabble, playing bingo at JFK, cheering for Harding football teams, and cooking
Sunday dinner for anyone that came through the back door.
Helen's four children, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, including three
newborns, brother John, sisters Jean, Patty and Ruth, many nieces, nephews, and
others are left to cherish her memory. A memorial Mass is scheduled for the Chapel
at St. Joseph Health Center on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 9 a.m. Memorials may be
made to Robinson Visiting Nurse & Hospice, 6847 N. Chestnut St., P.O. Box 1204,
Ravenna, Ohio 44266, or the family suggests enjoying a Sunday dinner with your loved
ones very soon.
