Lyman Root was born May 11, 1834, and departed this life March 2, 1906. He was the oldest child of Lyman and Almyra Hodges Root, who came from Camden, Oneida Co., N.Y., in 1837, to Warren Co., Pa., and purchased a farm two and one-half miles east of the village of Sugar Grove where they spent the remainder of their days. The home farm was still owned by their son at the time of his death, but as advancing years and declining strength unfitted him for the duties of the farm, he moved to the village in the spring of 1897. April 11, 1865, he married Emily Blakesley, who with two children, Ella Root-Johnson of Farmington, Pa., and Hugh E. Root of Sugar Grove, survive him, also a sister, Mrs. Mary Root-Loucks of Farmington, and one brother, Elijah Root of Sugar Grove. Lyman Root was a man of perfect honor and integrity, of marked energy and perseverance, and a rare social nature, who saw in all life its source and felt that at-one-ment that made every one his friend. As life, as we know it, is but a glimpse of the evolution of a spiritual individual, let us not sorrow but rather rejoice with him that in his nature there was so little of the negative shadow we call evil, and so much of the positive good, for his was a life to remember and emulate.
