Chartiers Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery North Strabane Township Washington County, Pennsylvania July 1, 2000 Compiled and Edited by Jean Suplick 4508 Reunion Drive Plano, Texas Introduction Chartiers Hill Presbyterian Church is located in North Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The current small, red brick structure sits on the east side of US Route 19 at the intersection State route 519 (Eighty-four Road). The church was founded by Dr. Rev. John McMillan in 1775 and continues to serve the community to this day. The well-maintained cemetery extends downhill from the church and remains an active burying ground. The church is frequently referred to in the area simply as "Hill Church". Old cemetery records are reported lost and have not been available for inspection by genealogists for some years. This is a sad loss since we know there were burials in the churchyard for which stones were not placed or are no longer readable. We must therefore rely upon other sources to account for who is buried at Hill Church. In 1937, the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution conducted and published a cemetery census. In 1970 another was done and again in 1994. These plus two other sources, taken together, are represented in this work. One further piece of information surfaced that is of general interest. In 1956, Dr. R. R. Snowden, then director of the Diagnostic Clinic of Pittsburgh, financed the recording of data on the older tombstones in the cemetery in order to preserve their inscriptions. The University of Pittsburgh Press untook the project, enlisting the services of Hugh Cleland, University of Pittsburgh historian, and James L. Swauger and Don W. Dragoo, scientists in the Section of Man at Carnegie Institute. Their mission was to recommend how to make a permanent recording of the inscriptions. They settled on making records of graves dated before 1810 and any others "Dr. Cleland might consider historically significant." Maps of the arrangements of the stones were made showing 31 rows of graves and a total of 731 stones, only 18 of which were dated prior to 1810. The results of their effort were published in the article "The Chartiers Hill Cemetery Project," Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, Vol. 45, 1962. About this work This book is an attempt to piece together as much information as possible about burials in the cemetery. The approximate 1435 entries reported here represent a synthesis of information taken from five sources: [1] Hill Church Cemetery Census, circa 1970 [2] Diary of Thompson Palmer, grave digger 1903-1906 [3] Hill Church Cemetery Census, August 1937 (DAR) [4] The Samuel MacMillan papers, 1914 [5] Observations of Jean Suplick Matuson and Sharon O’Donnell Pacanowski at Hill Church in October 1994 Note that the numbering above in no way indicates any ranking of relative importance. Before you attempt to use the information in this book, carefully read the following paragraphs describing what we know about each of these sources. I have included additional comments about the criteria used in sorting out conflicting information about individual burials. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the kind and enthusiastic support of my cousin, Martha Palmer Bayne of Washington, Pennsylvania, and my close friend, Sharon O’Donnell Pacanowski of Oveido, Florida. Both women have generously aided in the completion of this work. [1] Hill Church Cemetery Census, unknown authorship, circa 1970. A photocopy of this work was loaned to me by a member of the Genealogical Society of Southwestern Pennsylvania who described it as a list made by an LDS (Latter Day Saints) church member in the early 1970's. The list, in the form of a typed manuscript, contains many hand notations in the form of corrections or supplemental information. The work supplements the cemetery census done in 1937 in that subsequent burials, approximately 165 of them, are recorded. One difficulty with this work is that many details such as dates, ages, and name spellings contradict data in the 1937 Hill Church cemetery census. A small number of readable stones currently in the cemetery dating from the 1800's do not appear in this work at all (as is the case with the 1937 cemetery census also). Finally, 352 of the total 887 burials listed in this work are not corroborated by any of the other sources at this time. More than half those 352 individuals were buried prior to the 1937 census of the cemetery [3]. This should not throw any strong suspicion on the accuracy of those accounts, however, since we are aware of many burials for which there were stones not recorded in [3]. Also, it is not known if the author of the 1970 work had access to actual cemetery records, which would also explain the discrepancy. [2] Diary of Thompson Palmer, grave digger 1903-1906. My great-great- grandfather, Thompson Palmer, was born in 1842 and died in 1915. At one point in his life, he worked as a grave digger for the Chartiers Hill Church Cemetery and kept records of the burials he was involved with. [3] Cemetery Census reported by Mrs. Horne and Miss Elizabeth B. Weaver, August 1937. The work of Mrs. Horne and Miss Weaver was published and is available at the Citizens Library in Washington, Pennsylvania as well as at the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Library in Washington, D.C. Approximately 475 burials are enumerated in their work. Several stones readable in 1937 have since decayed and are now unreadable. It is not clear from what sources their work was derived. Visual inspection of the headstones should be assumed; however, several stones are known to have been missed completely and consequently, some persons known to be buried in the cemetery at that time do not appear in their account. Also, for each person listed in their work, Mrs. Horne and Miss Weaver listed the age at death. This information is not available on every stone, although it often can be calculated, and so we might speculate that the women actually had access to original church records, a proposition which has not been verified. [4] The Samuel MacMillan papers, 1919. In 1914 Samuel MacMillan, then 85- years-old, constructed a list of deceased persons from families mostly from the North Strabane and Canonsburg areas. For each person, the date of death and age of death is given. Also, happily, relationships and maiden names are also frequently noted as well as the place of internment. Many people were designated as being buried at Chartiers Hill Presbyterian Church (often abbreviated HC in Mr. MacMillan’s papers.) I discovered a photocopy of Mr. MacMillan's handwritten, untitled work in the genealogical collection at Citizen's Library, Washington, PA in December 1992. The work notes approximately 355 Hill Church burials, 43 of which do not appear in the [1] or [3] cemetery censuses. Samuel was a grandson of Rev. John McMillan and the son of John McMillan II and his second wife, Mary Kerr. Samuel was designated as "historian" in the 1935 book by Daniel M. Bennet in collaboration with his wife, Rebecca Caldwell Bennet, entitled Rev. John McMillan, D. D.: Pioneer, Preacher, and Educator. "After Mrs. McMillan's death on November 6, 1896, he became very much interested in the genealogy of the McMillan family, and spent much of the later years of his life tracing it up, visiting all the graveyards in this vicinity, and making a very complete record of those buried in them, and especially those who might be connected to the McMillan clan. He also spent some time visiting among his relatives, making trips to other states, and making careful notes of all those whom he met, carefully chronicling the number of the family, their birth, marriage, and death. These records, in possession of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth McDowell, have been a wonderful aid to the author in compiling these records." [5] Observations at the cemetery in October 1995. In an attempt to make this book current, and in an attempt at resolving some of the conflicts apparent in the other sources, Sharon O’Donnell Pacanowski and I visited the cemetery in October 1994. Our primary goal was to note any burials that were not found in either source [1] or source [3], although we did overlap in some cases as is noted in the following pages. Our observations were based on visual inspection of the headstones currently in the cemetery. In all we made approximately 475 observations. Additional comments In cases where two sources contained different years of birth or death for an individual, and it was not clear which date was correct, I added a second entry for that person. (Note there is no significance about which source is cited first.) McDowell, Agness 17 Jul 1825 79 yrs [1] consort of John McDowell [72 yrs] [4] Here, Agness McDowell’s age at death was given in source [1] as 79 years and in source [4] as 72 years. The reader will need to evaluate the sources cited in this book as well as their own supplemental research material to decide which is more realistic. In the case of Nancy McFadden, three sources provided no contradictory information, and so all three source citations are given on the same line. McFadden, Nancy 29 Dec 1841 70 yrs [1,3,4] consort of Hector McFadden The same notation is used for cases where two or more sources provided additional but not contradictory information. In some cases it was possible to resolve some date (year) conflicts. Often the authors of the various sources misinterpreted a numeral 1 as a numeral 4, or visa-versa, as it was carved on a gravestone. When a contradiction arose between two sources, I often made a final determination based on knowing the age at death or date of death of a spouse or a child. This frequently provided what I believe to be conclusive context for deciding which contradictory date was the erroneous one. Remember: This book is a secondary source. The best primary source for burials in the cemetery, the cemetery records themselves, are not available. The best secondary source available are the headstones themselves. Good genealogical research practice dictates that you weigh any information gleaned from this work against additional evidence you may possess before attaching any judgement of certainty about the information you find within.
