The 1937 census contained some errors and omissions that are corrected in this census. (Information in parentheses in the census below is from historical sources and not written on the tombstones.) The Covenanters originally established a burial ground behind their log meeting house in Canonsburg on the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Pitt Street in the early 1800's. In 1835, the congregation relocated 5 miles north to what is now Brigich Road and established another churchyard cemetery at that location. Burials continued to take place at the Canonsburg site until the late 1830's. There are no burial records for the Canonsburg Covenanters Cemetery. In 1877, the Canonsburg Herald reported the Canonsburg cemetery site was barely visible with only two stones standing and several others lying scattered about on the ground. The following are the inscriptions that could still be read in 1877. In memory of Isabelah Johnston who departed this life August 28th 1822 in the 31st yr. of her age. Also in memory of Robert Johnston who departed this life March 13th A. D. 1831 aged 74 yrs. In memory of Jannet Smith who departed this life April the 14th 1825, aged 24 years. In memory of Agnes Stormont, consort of David Stormont, who departed his life October the 17th A. D. 1828, aged 70 yrs. In memory of John Smith who departed his life August the 6th, 1837, aged 86 yrs. In 1904, the Covenanter Church (now known as Miller's Run Reformed Presbyterian) sold the old Canonsburg cemetery site to James McBurney of Canonsburg. Civil engineer, Murray Pollock, was hired to locate and survey the old burial ground in July of that year. He found the cemetery to be 80 x 160 feet with its location being over the hill toward what is now Town Park. The lone stone standing was that of Isabelah and Robert Johnston. That stone and their remains were moved to the second Covenanter Cemetery on Brigich Road. Directions to Cemetery: From Hoss's Steakhouse in Canonsburg, go straight across RR tracks at light. This is 980 North. Proceed on 980 North for approx. 5 miles. Sherwood Valley Pools will be on your left. At the crest of the hill, make a left onto Swihart Rd. After proceeding 4/10 mile, you will see the old Millers Run Church and Cemetery on the right. This is NOT Covenanters Cemetery. Proceed another 4/10 mile and make a rt. onto Brigich Rd. Proceed on Brigich for 1.2 miles. Covenanters Cemetery is at the top of the hill on the right and is surrounded by a chain link fence and gate which is kept locked. The first row that is seen when coming up the hill is identified as Row 1 in this census. Name Birth Death Information BEGGS, Alexander, d.
