I have included direction provided in the original document but many refer to specific farm names which may no longer be current or PA route numbers which have been superceded. Bentley Somerset Township On the Hillcrest Dairy farm overlooking the S.E. corner of Bentleyville. The cemetery is endowed by the family. The gate in the fence shows S.B and H.K Bentley. Jacob had one daughter by Alice – Mary Amanda Lynn Chalfant, wife of Benjamin Marion Chalfant, son of James who was the son of Chadds Chalfant – accepted by the DAR. No Dates Grable Fallowfield Township Tombstone readings by Mrs. E.C. Colvin in 1960. The cemetery is on a farm off Rt 917 about two miles south of Rt 136 at the end of a red-dog road to the left. The road to the cemetery is used by coal trucks (1983) and the cemetery is in terrible condition with the ground shaking from the trucks and one large tree’s roots have uprooted many of the stones. Some dates and details shown were provided by Mrs. Colvin from her personal files. Tombstone inscriptions are various times by Mrs. E.C. Colvin, Mr. Walter Huffman and Ms. Irene P. Lignian. The ancestor of the Grable families of Fallowfield Township, Washington County, PA was John Grable born in Washington County, MD in 1754. He married Salome Hickman in 1779. John Grable died in 1785 and his wife Salome died in 1854 in Washington County, PA. He served in the War of the Revolution as a Private, recorded in the DAR Patriots Index V.1 p.282. Christian Hootman was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and was one of the Hessian soldiers hired by the British to suppress the American colonists. At the battle of Brandywine he was taken prisoner (making no effort to escape) was soon drumming in the Continental Army under General Washington. In 1785 he settled on the farm in Donegal Township on which he died in 1845. Caspar Revenaugh, a German, was one of the early settlers in Washington County settling on Buffalo Creek in 1784. John and William Bryson settled early on Buffalo Creek. Some dates and details shown were provided by Mrs. Colvin from her personal files. Tombstone readings by Mrs. E.C. Colvin in 1950. William Jones was born in Ellicott Mills, Maryland in May 1763 and died toward the end of March 1862. He located in the neighborhood of Ginger Hill in Washington County a few years before the Whiskey rebellion, on a farm owned by his son William. He was a blacksmith by trade. When the U.S. troops were sent to disperse the insurgents, they halted near his farm from whence they were ordered to return as the Insurrection was over. While in camp, shod some of the government horses. He was loyal to the government and took no part in the Insurrection. By his first wife he had eleven children, five sons and six daughters – John, Elijah, Jesse, Samuel, William, Rebecca, Deliliah, Polly, Ruth, Rose and Ann. At an advance age, he married Mrs. Jane Phillips. They ahd no children. John was the founder of Jonestown in Fallowfield Township where he lived most of his life. Directions: Start at Ginger Hill (Rt 136 west of Monongahela) and travel south (LR 62040) on the road to Bentleyville then take the first right. The Eakin Farm is on the right. The cemetery is on a knoll behind the residence. You must obtain permission to visit the cemetery. Tombstone readings by Mrs. Margaret Colvin and Irene P. Lignian in 1972. The cemetery was described as run down with a fence that is also down. The Preston family is documented on page 1248 of the Comm Biographical History of Washington County by Beers Vol 3 of the Horn papers (patents) pages 72 and 78 Page 72: Nottingham Township – p.78 Somerset Township (same property “Spice Wood Vale” 385.75 acres strict Surv 1 Nov 1786 in pursuance of a Virginia certificate, Patented – 26 Oct 1787 to Bernard Preston on Warrant to accept dated 23 Oct 1787.
