Caldwell, , August 2012 This page was last updated: 7 August 2012 German Lutheran Cemetery Washington Boro, Washington County, Pennsylvania The exact location of the cemetery is unclear but according to the Crumrine, the church and cemetery were located on lots 264 and 265 in Washington Borough. Except for a mention in Boyd Crumrine, "History of Washington County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men" (Philadelphia: L. H. Leverts & Co., 1882), there is litle known historically about the German Lutheran Church and Cemetery. According to Crumrine, it was not known at what time this church organization was effected, but on the 5th of May, 1812, "Jacob Weirich, Lewis Hewitt, David Sedicker, and Christian Hornish, Trustees and Managers of the German Lutheran and Presbyterian Church of the Borough of Washington," purchased lots 264 and 265 of the town plat from Peter Snyder for fifty dollars. Thus trustees in September of that year contracted with James Chambers, a carpenter, to build the church for one hundred and seventy dollars, the trustees furnishing the material. It was not completed until 1816, and in that year another subscription was taken up to "finish the church." In 1818 the trustees built a small log house (which is still standing) on the northwest corner of the ground for a school-house, which was occupied for that purpose until 1831, when they rented it to Jacob Kuffenburger in consideration of his taking charge of the church building. The lots were subject to a ground-rent of two dollars when purchased, which was continued until about 1870. Repairs were made upon the church from time to time, notably in 1843 and in 1868, the latter year at a cost of about nine hundred dollars. Neither the name of the person who transcribe the tombstones nor the date of the transcriptions are known. The information was in the archives of the Washington County Historical Society and whose records are now located in the genealogy section of the Citizen's Library in Washington, PA LAST NAME FIRST NAME BORN DIED AGE NOTES Abbott No Name 20 Sep 1834 30 May 1840 daughter of Sarah Abbott Albert John 24 Mar 1838 25yr 8mo 15da Andre George (Sr) 1845 Aston Sarah 28 Aug 1824 25yr Bane Mary E. 28 Feb 1850 1yr 9mo daughter of J&M Bedilion Elizabeth 24 Mar 1838 79yr Consort of Abraham Bell Christina 17 Mar 1833 29yr Consort of James Bell Christine 25 Jun 1833 3mo 17da daughter of J&C Buris Twins 25 Jul 1834 7wk 1da George and Sophia Charlton Mary 17 Nov 1842 61yr Consort of Robert Charlton Mary 2 Aug 1828 6yr 2mo 24da Charlton Thomas S. 24 Mar 1843 8 Jul 1844 son of Joseph and Margaret Doak Levina 16 Aug 1851 19yr 6mo 11da daughter of J&S Doak Nancy Jane 20 Apr 1845 16yr 21da daughter of J.S.
