PA Established 1832 The Speer Spring Cemetery was established next to the Speer Spring Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church when it was constructed in 1832 on a parcel of land from the Speer farm. The first burial occurred when Nancy Giffin, age 10 years, died on June 17, 1832. In 1885, the congregation observed its last communion at the "Old Bridge Church" as it was commonly called and moved into their new church building on Greenside Avenue, leaving the cemetery behind. In 1889, the church sold the cemetery to twenty individual shareholders who formed the Speer Spring Cemetery Company, Inc. At this point in time, the cemetery became independent from the church. Burials, which had been previously limited to church members only, were now available to the general public. For a time, the cemetery's unused land was rented as pasturage. In 1895, a portion was leased for oil and gas exploration, another for farming. A pauper's section as set aside for those who were unable to afford burial costs, and in 1919, acreage was sold to the North Strabane Township School District. By the early 1930's, the grounds were overgrown with weeds and briars and many tombstones were down. A clean-up project was undertaken in the summer of 1933 by the members of the Private James Perry Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The VFW became interested in the cemetery when it discovered that 37 veterans, many from the Civil War, were buried there. Weeds were cut, briars removed, headstones straightened and fence posts were placed. About half of the veterans were identified, but the others only had iron GAR markers identifying grave location without names. A search for cemetery records and maps proved futile because it was learned that most had been destroyed. After the cleanup, the cemetery board reorganized with the promise to maintain the cemetery, but once again it fell into disrepair. In 1953, a community effort initiated by the Knights of Pythias began the first of several attempts to clean up and restore the cemetery. Trees, brush and tall grass were cut down and the cemetery was maintained for a time. In 1963, the community was once again forced to take interest in the cemetery because the PA Department of Transportation wanted to purchase part of the acreage for Interstate 79. At one point, it was even suggested that the cemetery be condemned and flattened so the interstate could go straight over the old burial sites. Negotiations needed to be held with a representative of the Speer Spring Cemetery Company, but the twenty original shareholders were all dead. On April 14, 1964, a new Speer Spring Cemetery Company was incorporated under the original charter as a non-profit organization. The suggestion to flatten the cemetery was rejected, which is why Interstate 79 has a wide curve at this point. The cemetery company only sold .07 of an acre to the PA Department of Transportation in 1965 for the new highway. On March 27, 1967, the last interment was made. It is of interest and seems appropriate that Ada Dickson, who had been baptized in the "Old Bridge Church" in 1879, was the last to be buried here. Once again the cemetery fell into neglect until a clean-up project was begun by a Boy Scout for his Eagle Scout project in 1976. A large work committee consisting of 32 men from the community spearheaded the work. The Irvin Works of U. S. Steel donated the large white cross in the center of the cemetery to all those buried here whose identities are unknown. A dedication ceremony took place on May 29, 1977 with four local ministers participating. This same year, the cemetery association once again reorganized. A small but loyal crew of volunteer workers now cares for the cemetery. Financial support for the cemetery is handled by the Canonsburg U.P. Church. In February 1996, vandals overturned about 50 headstones with some of them being cracked. Later that year in September, 10 volunteers, including local youth and members of the cemetery board, uprighted and repaired many of the stones. There are approximately 250 markers in the cemetery, though there are many more burials than the number of stones. The last burial took place in 1967. Only deed holders of lots have the right of burial now. This historical cemetery holds the remains of many veterans, former slaves, victims of the Morgan Opera House tragedy and local mine disasters, along with many Speer Spring church members and some of the pioneers who helped settle this area.
