He was born in 1757 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He enlisted while living in Hunterdon County and served from June 1776 for five months in Captain John Anderson's. company, Colonels Johnson and Phillips' regiment and was in the battle of Flatbush; from March, 1777 one month under Captain John Phillips and Colonel Snook; in September, 1777, two weeks under Captain Philip Snook; in September, 1777, two weeks under Captain Phillips; from December, 1777, one month under Captain Hoppack; from February, 1778, two months under Captain John Shank and Colonels Phillips and Jacob Houghton.
