Born March 9, 1755 in what was then Lancaster Co. Pa. now West Nottingham Twp. Cecil Co. Md. Oct. 2, 1832, issued; residence Smith twp., Washington Co., Pa. Died May 17, 1840. Enlisted from Carlise, Pa. "Paid at Treasury under Act April 6, 18238". June 11, 1841, to Executor of ANDREW McCLEAN. He served as private, sergeant, and )quarter-master-sergeant of Volunteers). Was in the battles of Long Island, Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. Served as a volunteer in Co. of his cousin JOHN STEELE of Carlisle, son of Rev. JOHN STEELE. Served under Captain WILLIAM COOKE and Col. WILLIAM McKINNEY. He was pensioned as sergeant, although his commission as quartermaster-sergeant of 3rd Pa., dated Dec. 3, 1780, signed by Major W. ALEXANDER is on file. JOHN L. ABERNATHY, #125 N. 4th St., Newark, Ohio writes May 29, 1896, asking for record of "ANDREW McLEAN, Revolutionary soldier, pensioned, who enlisted on banks of Juniata river and resided on Maryland side; afterwards moved to Washington Co., Pennsylvania. Was with Wayne at Stony Point." J. RALPH RIGBY, #615 Elm St., Youngstown, Ohio, May 9, 1905, asks for "ANDREW McLEAN who was in Capt. THOMAS ASKEY's Co., Cumberland Co. Militia." "born March 9, 1755 in what was then Lancaster Co., Pa., but when the line between Pennsylvania and Maryland was drawn, my father's house was in Cecil co., North Nottingham twp., Maryland. Continued to live there until July, 1776, when went on a visit to relatives and friends at Carlisle, Pa., and from there, about July, 1776, he enlisted. Had an Uncle, a clergyman in Carlisle, Rev. JOHN STEELE, who son, JOHN STEELE, Esq., a young lawyer, raised a company of volunteers of which he was elected Captain (WILLIAM BLAIR, Lieut.) and he was induced by relationship to join. Dr. W. CROSKY was ensign. "We volunteered for two months, and marched through Philadelphia, Trenton, Princeton and Brunswick to Amboy. When we were at Amboy the British were in full view on Staten Island and our Captan proposed that we should volunteer to go to New York, to which we all consented and proceeded to the city. When we arrived in the city the British crossed over to Long Island and we were ordered to cross to the Island by Lord STERLING. I was engaged then in the bloody battle of Long Island and shortly after returned to Carlisle, having prolonged my tour of service to three months instead of two." In December, 1776, enlisted in Army of U.S. under Captain McKINLEY for 3 years and served in the 12th Regt. Pa. Line, Col. WILLIAM COOKE. Was first sergeant and served in battle of Brandywine. Regiment was broken up and he was transferred to 3rd Regt., Pa. Line, and appointed quartermaster sergeant. Served about 3 years. When first joined the regiment was under Capt. WILLIAM CRAIG until appointed quartermaster-sergeant. Col. THOMAS CRAIG commanded the regiment; Major THOMAS ALEXANDER also in regiment. Was in the battles of Germantown and Monmouth and several skirmishes. Discharged at Morristown, N.J. Dec. 3, 1780; returned to his father's home in Cecil Co. for five years, when he married in Lancaster Co., and resided in that county for one year and then moved to Washington Co., Pa.
