Captain Dias had been working all night and had been successful in getting all the coal removed from the barges, when the wind arose and the ice in the river compelled the digger to leave its course and was carried out in the channel of the river. While out there the digger on which Captain Dias was, suddenly raised out of the water. The men on board thought some great sea demon was acting and became badly frightened, but still the digger kept raising until her hull was entirely out of water and captain was unable to do a thing. The trouble was soon discovered, as it was found that the two sunken barges when relieved of their heavy load of coal had drifted to the channel also and had suddenly risen from the bottom and had come up directly under the digger. A messenger had to be sent to the locks and a large boat sent to their aid, which towed them to the docks, where the digger was removed from the barges.
