July 28, 1939 Daily Courier, Connellsville, Pa. _________________________________________________________________________________ County Railroad Denied Permission To Discontinue By United Press. HARRISBURG, July 28.The Public Utility Commission today refused authorization to the Monongahela Railroad for discontinuance of two passenger trains between Brownsville and West Point Marion, Fayette county, because "the service is necessary." The trains are operated between the two points every day except Sunday. Protests against discontinuance of the service were filed by the Brownsville, Point Marion and Masontown boroughs, Brownsville Board of Trade, Luzerne township board of supervisors, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and more than 2,000 residents in the train area. The company contended it was losing $10,437 a year by operating the line and that for the past decade coal mining operations in the Brownsville - West Point Marion district have been decreasing until they have reached complete stoppage in some instances. Protestants refuted that claim by quoting company figures to show that during 1935 10,009 persons used the trains and 17,546 passengers were recorded in 1937. A similar proceeding is before the West Virginia Public Service Commission. The company is controlled jointly by the Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroads.
