Mr. Foster was a native of Mercer county, but his active life was spent in Westmoreland. As far hack as 1828 he was an active young Democratic Jackson politician of this county, was elected to the Legislature severed times in Congress, and in 1866 was the Democratic candidate for governor against Governor Curtin. Mr. Foster adorned whatever subject be touched in law or politics, and was held in high esteem and affection by men of all parties. Mr. Foster was descended from Alexander Foster, who about 172S, emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland, and with many other Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, settled in Little Briton township, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Alexander Foster had three sons and six daughters. His sons were: James, who removed to Washington county. Pa. shortly after the Revolutionary war; John, who removed Tennessee, where he died, leaving a large number of descendants; William, who was a distinguished Presbyterian minister, pastor of the Upper Octorara congregation, Lancaster county, Pa.: William was the grandfather of Hon. Henry D. Foster, just deceased; also of his cousins, the late Alexander W. Foster and Col. J. Heron Foster, of Pittsburgh. James was the grandfather of Stephen C. Foster, the great American musical composer; also of William B. Foster, Jr., late Vice President of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and of Morrison Foster, of Allegheny City. The descendants of John have been for many years distinguished in the councils of Tennessee, and before the war of the Nation.
