It also was the designation of that part of the country in the township divisions of the same when it belonged to the jurisdiction of Bedford County. As a Township of Westmoreland it is bounded as follows: “To begin where the line of Fairfield Township intersects the County line, and to run along that line to where the Youghiogheny crosses the same; thence down the north side of the Youghiogheny to the top of Chestnut Ridge; thence along the top of said Chestnut Ridge to the line of Armstrong Township; thence up to the said run to the place of beginning.” The present boundary lines of the Township bear little resemblance to those of the original, as described above; the township then embraced a great portion of Ligonier Valley, and likewise embraced a good portion of what is now Cook Township, together with that part of Ligonier Valley which lies between Loyalhanna and the Chestnut Ridge. Originally it actually was the township of much of that historic ground about Fort Ligonier, and all the old history of Cook Township. The first curtailment or altercation in Donegal Township's territorial limits, was at the formation of Fayette County, shortly after the end of the Revolution, when that part of the township south of its present boundary line, and within the limits of the new County was stricken off with it. The last Township taken from Donegal was Cook, in 1855. The present boundary lines of Donegal Township are as follows: - On the north by Cook Township; on the east by the Laural Hill, the eastern boundry of the County; on the south by the Fayette County line, contiguous to Saltlick Township therein, and on the west by Chestnut Ridge. Donegal Borough The village of Donegal dates from the early part of the eighteenth century, and it was a convergent point for the whole of the upper part of the valley for training-days, for rifle-matches, for village sports, and for store and mail purposes, in the days during and shortly after the Revolutionary War. Its situation is on one of the great high-ways which was daily traversed by mail and passenger coaches, by the lumbering six-horse wagons, and by droves of cattle & hogs from the west, made it a desirable location for the tavern keeper, the blacksmith, the wagon-maker, and the country store-keeper. Hence, after the business was diverted from the old roads, such as these, the prosperity of the place was retarded, and the business of Donegal Village was left dependent on those of the town, or of the immediate neighborhood. Donegal was surrounded by the following owned lands originally: Henry McKlveen; Edward S Ringler; Mary A Keslar; Samuel Fligor; Clement Hubbs; H M Millhoff; John Gay; Eli Keslar; & William Logan. The fall of 1940 brought a “blessing in disguise” to the survivors of the village. The new Pennsylvania State Super Highway was opened to the public, with a clover-leaf-entrance at Donegal. When the first vehicle rolled over the entire 161-mile length of the moderate level artery, it consummated 185 years of dreams, plus much actual labor, and a great expenditure of money and human lives in conquering the seemingly indomitable Appalachian Mountains. The earliest known use of the same route was made in 1755, when Colonel James Burd, a Pennsylvania frontiersman and engineer began cutting a wagon-road from Shippensburg to Pittsburg to aid General Braddock in his valiant struggle against the French and Indians on the Ohio River. But Burd abandoned the project when he received word of Braddock's defeat. George Washington, as a young engineer, surveyed the section of the route known as Forbes Road. Eighty years after Burd's venture, the first survey of the route for a railroad was authorized by the State Legislature, and in 1844, further surveys were made by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. In 1883, a further attempt was made to have cheaper, more direct and more certain transportation for steel from Pittsburg to Tidewater, but the attempt was abandoned. It was not until 1937 that the next major and final move was taken to utilize the route to provide easy access between the Middlewest and the Atlantic Seaboard, and in 1938 the State Legislature made provisions for establishment of the Turnpike Commission and authorized it to finance and build the all-weather road. The Commission termed it as “the greatest single high-way project ever attempted in the history of the United States.” It is known as the “Dream Highway”. The earliest recorded or inscribed date on a tombstone in Donegal Cemetery is that of Bertha D. Randolph, Daughter of J.J. & M.A. Randolph. Died May 12, 1851. Age 2 Years, 6 Months, 4 Days. Ere this date burials were made on the farms of the individual owners, which gradually grew and are being used to-day as burial grounds for many descendents.
