While this request went unheeded, by 1774 Rev. Smith was chosen as first minister of the congregation. He was one of four circuit riders traveling and preaching at the time. From 1775 thru 1801 supply ministers served the congregation. After a number of years of uncertainty as to the ministry, with various men serving, Rev. Joseph Scroggs became Pastor in 1815 and served until 1872. During the ministry of Rev. Scroggs the original log building used as a church was replaced by a new one at the same site. After the death of Dr. Scroggs the congregation was served by supply ministers until 1886 when Dr. George Vincent became Pastor. It was during his ministry that the name of the church was changed from Donegal to Fairmont. The cemetery is located at the rear of the church. This Church and Cemetery are on the left, a short distance off route #711, known as the Old Valley Road, or Catawba Trail. Both church and cemetery are in excellent condition, and traveling from Stahlstown to Ligonier on route #711, it is quite visible to the left about one-eighth of a mile, and about two miles East of Stahlstown. The cemetery was still being used as a burial place in 1946. The bodies of three Revolutionary War Soldiers rest in this sacred spot, whose names follow: 1. John Carnes (Kerns), 1760 - 1831 (aged 70), Private, Samuel Shannon's Company, Frontier Rangers, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Third Series, Volume 23, pages 287 - 318, Pennsylvania Archives. 2. William Campbell, 1763 - 1850, Soldier and Indian Captive, Pensioner, Act of 1838, P.L. 153. 3. James Matthews, 1742 - 1845, Cumberland County Frontier Ranger, 3rd Series, Volume 23, page 276, Pennsylvania Archives. The inscriptions on all tombstones in Fairmont United Presbyterian Church Cemetery were copied during October, 1945, by members of Braddock Trail Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Mount Pleasant, Penna. These inscriptions were typed by Charlotte Hay Beard, (Mrs R. Edward Beard), Registrar of Braddock Trail Chapter, #550 East Crawford Avenue, Connellsville, Penna. During the winter of 1947. My dear Mrs Creyke: During my serving as Regent of Braddock Trail Chapter, N.S.D.A.R., Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, on November 1st, 1947, we presented to our Washington D.C. D.A.R. Library, and to our Pennsylvania State Library, a volume of Cemetery Records, labeled, "Tombstone Inscriptions of Cemeteries in Cook, Donegal, East Huntingdon, Hempfield, Mount Pleasant, and Unity Townships, Westmoreland County, Pa." Recently, during 1955, our State of Pennsylvania, at the suggestion of the Sons of the American Revolution, erected two granite markers, or low regulation monuments in the Fairmont United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cook Township, Westmoreland County, inscribed as follows: 1. WILLIAMS Richard Rose Anne Martzell, His Wife 1730 - 1812 Capt. 1St B.N. Westm'd. Co. Militia, Rev. War (Also Revolutionary War Metal Marker & Flag) 2. William Gettemy Pennsylvania, Pvt. Cumberland County Militia, Rev. War July 4, 1751 - May 15 1836 (Also Revolutionary War Metal Marker & Flag) Will you please have these records inserted adjacent to page 117 of our volume. We have numbered the page in our volume as 116 1/2, opposite page 117. These stones were erected at or near the spot where these two men were supposedly buried. Mr. Clifford F. Hood, at present, President of the United States Steel Corporation, descends from these two Revolutionary War Ancestors, and at present the writer is preparing Application Papers for Mr. Hood's Membership in the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution, to affiliate with our New Chapter, known as the Mount Pleasant Chapter, N.S.S.A.R., Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, which the writer had the honor to organize last April 2nd, with 34 Charter Members. The writer also had the honor of addressing this new chapter at their September Meeting on the subject, "The Constitution of the United States, and Liberty Bell". Mrs Geoffrey Creyke, Librarian General, N.S.D.A.R. I shall appreciate your instructing the proper one in charge of our Library to add these inscriptions to our volume. I thank you. Yours most Sincerely, Mrs R Edward Beard, Registrar Copy to Pennsylvania State Library Files and tombstone photographs contributed 2008 as indicated: Campbell, Margaret A., 1840 - 1896, (contributed by Donna Mohney) Columbus, Melvin C., 11 Mar 1922 - 30 Jul 1970, WWII flag marker, (contributed by Jacque Boyd) Columbus, Glea E., 18 Sep 1924 - 20 Jul 1988, (contributed by Jacque Boyd) Fooks, Elaine M.
