Mr. James G. Freeman, Caretaker July 12th, 1947, whose address is R.D.#1, Acme, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, made the following statement to Members of Braddock Trail Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Mount Pleasant, Penna., when these Members were copying the tombstone inscriptions on the above named date: - “This plot of ground was used as a Burial Ground during the French and Indian War, and earlier than that period, as is found on the oldest stone, which is inscribed “I.B. 1708”. More than fifty bodies are buried in this old section, which graves are marked with stones moved from the old Freeman Furnace, which stones bear no inscriptions. Several Indian Skeletons have been removed from the burial spot, which skeletons can be seen in glass cases in the Fayette-Westmoreland Historical Building at West Overton, Pennsylvania. Due to this old Burial Ground being situated on the farm of my grandfather John Freeman, he and his wife, Nancy Freeman, deeded the tract of land to the Trustees of the Freeman Graveyard April 2, 1895. A perpetual care fund is in process of being raised, and a Charter for the Freeman Cemetery Association has been granted by the State of Pennsylvania”. The Atlas of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, from actual surveys and under the direction of S.N. & D.G. Beers, Published by A. Pomeroy, Philadelphia, 1867, shows the following as owners of tracts of land in the neighborhood of this cemetery, and the residents thereon: A. Stairs; J.J. Stairs; J.P. Stairs; J. Hetherington; Mrs. Byerly; Mrs. Bear; H. Hartley; G. Byerly; G. Freeman; A. Albert; D.R. Miller; J. Freeman; S. Freeman; H. Sniverly; J. Wissinger; D. Sheats. A description of the survey of the Cemetery is found on the following page, as recorded in deed in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
