HISTORY OF HAY (OR SHAFFER) Private Cemetery This old cemetery is situated in Mount Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, at the forks of the road originally known as Clay Pike, and just off the Main Wagon Road, traveled by the Stage Coaches from Pittsburg to Cumberland, over which drovers drove herds of cattle, sheep and turkeys shortly after the War of the Revolution. The latter part of 1834, Daniel Hay purchased the farm on which the cemetery is located. He is the son of Michael & Elizabeth Young Hay, and was born November 15, 1807. He married Catharine Friedline, who was born February 21st, 1813. Both bodies rest in this private cemetery, together with two children, who died young; also, a second wife of Daniel Hay, Margaret Stairs Hay. Daniel Hay was the owner and proprietor of the Old Tavern known as “Ye Ole Hay Tavern”, where the drovers with their herds would put-up for the night. Many of his descendents still live in Westmoreland County. The 1867 Atlas of Westmoreland County, By S.N. & D.G. Beers Surveys, and published by A. Pomeroy, shows the following as owners of the various farms in the vicinity of the Cemetery, D. Hay Hotel; P. Hays; D. Hay Saw-mill; J. Harman; W. Hays; D. May; L.H. May; J. May; Mrs. Stimmel; Shaw Estate. Descendents of these families are buried within the little private burial ground. The Cemetery tombstone inscriptions show a burial as late as 1928. However, it is in very bad condition, and inaccessible by road, due to the fields being cultivated annually, grains of various kinds being harvested therefrom. The farm is partly owned (being originally one-thousand acres) by Mr. Jesse M. Hays, Acme, Westmoreland County, Pa. The old tavern has been dismantled, which was built of logs and stone, and replacing it is a beautiful stone home of Mr. & Mrs. Marion W. Halle; Mrs. Halle is a daughter of Mr. Jesse M. Hays, and she is a Member of Braddock Trail Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Mount Pleasant, Penna. These Tombstone Inscriptions were copied by Miss Almette Pearl Gay and her Mother, August 31, 1947 and typed by Miss Almetta Pearl Gay, #273 East Crawford Avenue, Connellsville, Penna.
