Received a letter from J L Weaver a few days ago he mentioned that Leslie was down a few days since and that they were all well and greater part of them were going to Johnstown. That was certainly a terrible disaster a whole city wiped out of existence in a moment. People from this vivinity sympathize with them very much. A lady and gentleman who are from there are in school. This property was valued at $ 20,000. and is all destroyed. A lady by the name of Sadie Eldridge, a student, had five uncles living there of which she knows three to have been drowned and probably the others are also. She grieves their loss very much. Received four letters on Tue., one from Wm Medsger saying he would be at home this week, and one from A D H. I suppose the works are running very well by this time and Luke still at work. This school is more costly than I thought it would be, It will cost me nearly $ 55., including fare etc. Wm Medsger's cost was $ 39., all taken together. It is certainly a first class college in every respect. I suppose Bannings house is finished by this time, have you heard from the carpenter that got hurt while at work on the building? Did they have the ball that they were talking about? We have very proficient teachers in all the classes, If I stay for examinations, I hope to take at least two of the grades. I will have a great deal of work to do in Rhetoric the next few weeks. I will have an essay to write this week. There are about 30 in the class. I have been taking writing a few weeks but am not improving much yet, am I? Do you mind what you said about the corn? I suffered that night. 12:50 PM Danl Hohenshal will write to Donnie next time. I suppose the boys are all at work by this time. I expect Will is at Larimers and Bork in the garden. I will close for this time, hoping to hear from you, and that all are well. Yours, J E Hohenshal. PS:You let me know when the schools will be let, If you do not have time, put in an application for the Hershel or the Union School. Additional Comments: The letter was addressed to Wm Hohenshal, Jacobs Creek, Westmoreland Co., Penna and was sent with a two cent stamp. J E was in college at Mt Union, Ohio.
