JOHN WHITE, born in Westmoreland county, Pa., December 30, 1819. Served as lieutenant in Mexican war, and wounded at Chapultepec. Appointed territorial governor of Kansas, 1856. Entered the Civil war as colonel, and was wounded at Bolivar Heights and Cedar Mountain. Made brigadier and led a division at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Joined Hooker's forces and participated in capture of Lookout Mountain. Commanded 2d division of 2d army corps during Sherman's march to the sea. Made military governor of Savannah, and brevet major-general. Elected Governor of Pennsylvania, 1866, and re-elected, 1870. Died February 8, 1873.
