The youth was about eighteen feet from shore when he went under, sinking for a depth of twenty feet. Three youths from Marguerite dove into the deep water, one with all his clothes on, in an attempt to effect a rescue but Haines was dead when brought to the surface. Some believed his death due to a heart attack which suddenly overtook him, while others said the death was due to drowning. A hurry call was sent to the Greensburg firemen who attempted to revive him, working until after 10 o’clock last night but the heart had stopped. After the firemen had given up, further attempts at resuscitation were made but without avail. Haines had come to the reservoir with three or four other companions of Foxtown and when one of his companion’s who was standing on the shore heard his cries for help, he fainted and tumbled into the water. Another companion who was in the water with Haines went under the surface at about the same time but he was rescued and both he and the one who fainted were revived at once and assisted as best they could with the rescue measures. Haines had been jumping up and down in the reservoir about twelve or fifteen feet from shore and apparently did not know that there was a sudden drop a few feet further out. As he only went under but once it was five or six minutes before the Marguerite youths who dove in for him at once were able to locate the missing youth. Morris Harbaugh, aged 18 years, Earl Board, 20 years, and the latter's younger brother, Griffith, were among those who helped to bring the body out of the water. Haines was pronounced dead by Dr. Edward G. Ankney when he arrived upon the scene a few minutes later but attempts were begun at once to resuscitate him in the hope that the youth might still have a spark of life left. There is an undercurrent in the reservoir which has been the cause or several drownings there in the past and it is believed that this was one of the reasons why the youth never came to the surface again after going down.
