All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Virginia Crilley varcsix@hot.rr.com ************************************************ The Westmoreland Democrat 1903 KILLED WHILE GOING TO CHURCH Sunday morning, while Mrs. William Hoy, wife of Sewickley township farmer, was walking on the B & O railroad tracks, going to West Newton, to attend services at the Presbyterian Church, she was run down by an empty engine and instantly killed. Deceased was 55 years of age, universally esteems, and formerly lived in the vicinity of Adamsburge and Murrysville. Additional Comments: The Westmoreland Democrat, Greensburg, PA Jan 21, 1903 Hannah Jane Patton married William H Hoy on March 16, 1875. She was the daughter of James and Ruth Anna Riley Patton. She is buried in West Newton Cemetery beside her husband. Family stories relate that the mother and daughters frequently used the railroad as a short cut to get to West Newton Presbyterian Church from their dairy farm. On this occasion, the mother was taking fresh doughnuts to church and went ahead of her family. They came upon the terrible accident just after it happened. Rev. J.C. Meloy was the pastor who held the service and burial.
