The Cambria Freeman. (Ebensburg, Pa.) December 22, 1870
Two water troughs, similar to those now in use in England, have recently been
introduced on the Penn. Rail Road. One of these troughs is at Derry and the other
immediately west of Johnstown. They are each eighteen inches wide, six inches deep
and fifteen hundred feet long, and are designated to supply engines with water on
the run. A spout will be lowered into the trough and the water forced up by the
speed of the train at the rate of 2,200 gallons from each trough, thus enabling the
fastest trains to make the run, from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh with only one stop at
Altoona.
