He was the son of the late Lawrence and Grace Adams Egner Bates. A member and past deacon of Christ United Church of Christ, Latrobe, he was a retired employee of Westinghouse, Derry, and veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Emma Woodward, and one brother, Paul Bates. Surviving are his wife, Beatrice Stahl Bates; one son, Craig R. of Latrobe RD 1; five sisters, Mrs. George (Helen) Schirf of Latrobe, Mrs. Abe (Blanche) Hughes of Latrobe RD 1, Mrs. James (Ruth) Johnstone of Greensburg, Mrs. Grace Bell of Latrobe RD 2 and Mrs. Joanne Ritenour of Florida, and one granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in John J. Lopatich Funeral Home, Latrobe. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Christ United Church of Christ with the Rev. Veldon R. Grasmick officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery, Cook Township. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ United Church of Christ.
