Bates, 76, of Latrobe RD 1 died Friday, March 1, 1996 at his home. He was born Nov. 23, 1919 in Ligonier Township, a son of the late Oscar and Mae Ferry Bates. Prior to retirement he was employed as a carpenter. He was a member of Bell Memorial Church, Latrobe and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Harr Bates, April 29, 1995, and two sisters, Grace McCauley and Edith Halferty. He is survived by a son, William E. Bates Jr. (and his wife Patricia), Ligonier, a daughter, Donna M. Bates, Latrobe RD 1; two grandchildren, Jason and Rachel Bates; a brother, Robert Bates, Darlington, and three sisters, Hazel M. Bates, Darlington, Mrs. Walter (Ruth) Hammonn, Shrevesport, LA, and Mrs. David (Mary) McCullough, Monroeville. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Snyder Funeral Home, Route 982 S. Latrobe (Youngstown). Service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Bell Memorial Church with the Rev. Merle N. Weimer officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Reformed Cemetery, Trauger, Gordon O.
