When quite a young man he volunteered for the Mexican war in the famous "Westmoreland Guards," being in Capt. John W. Johnston's company. In the storming of the citadel of Chepultepec he was badly wounded, while his younger brother, Henry, was instantly killed at his side. After a long illness be recovered and located in Illinois. When the Civil war broke out he enlisted in an Illinois regiment and served throughout the war. After peace was declared, Mr. Bates moved to Kansas where he engaged in farming, until his death. He was a brother of the late William Bates, of Derry township.
