 The Somerset herald. (Somerset, Pa.), January 21, 1880
Jan. 16th, 1880, James Benford, of Ligonier, Westmoreland Co., formerly of this
place, aged 80 years, 4 months and 21 days… James Benford, Sr., died at the
residence of his son-in-law, John Haines, in Jenner township, on Friday last, and
was buried on Saturday evening in the German cemetery at Somerset. Mr. Benford was
in the eighty-first year of his age, and the immediate cause of death was a
paralytic stroke... He had twenty one brothers, born of one father and mother, all
of whom reached manhood and nearly all have been the head of large families. Several
of the brothers are yet residing in this vicinity. Some of them lived to be more
than ninety years of age. We are sorry to chronicle the death of this relic of the
last century.
