The subject of this brief notice was born near Gettysburg, this State. He came to Westmoreland county when quite young and settled in Youngstown, a short distance from Latrobe, where he lived for a number of years. For the last twenty years he has made his home in Latrobe, where he and his son Alexander carried on the tanning business. Mr. Douglass was a ruling elder of the Presbyterian church of this place for a number of years, and served a term as Justice of the Peace. His wife died several years ago. His two sons, Alexander and James, Jr., were members of Company K, Fifty-third Pa. Vols. James was taken prisoner and died in the rebel prison at Salisbury, North Carolina. Alexander is now the only surviving member of the family. Mr. Douglass was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Latrobe and his familiar figure will be sadly missed on our streets His mortal remains were laid to rest in Unity cemetery.
