Clay Gibson, MD, 86, of Latrobe, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, in Integrated Health Services at Mountain View, Unity Township. Born March 1, 1915, in Latrobe, he was a son of the late Leo Clair and Lucy (Thomas) Gibson. Dr. Gibson was a graduate of Latrobe High School, Kiski Prep, Colgate University and the Temple University School of Medicine. He served his residency at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Gibson was a family practice physician in Latrobe for many years and also served as the Greater Latrobe School District physician from 1946 until his retirement. In the year 2000, he was one of five recipients in the country to receive the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association's Distinguished Service Award. He also received the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association's Distinguished Service Award. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and was a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, the Westmoreland County Medical Society, the Latrobe Academy of Medicine and the National and State Family Practice associations. Dr. Gibson was a member of the Latrobe Presbyterian Church, F&AM Loyalhanna Lodge 275, the Kedron Commandery, and a life member of the BPOE Lodge 907 in Latrobe. He also was awarded the American Legion Citizenship Award in 1980 for medical services rendered to the youth in the Greater Latrobe School District, and the Latrobe Area Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1991 for 50 years of service to the Greater Latrobe School District. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Gibson, and two sisters, Clair Stover and Blanche Mathis. He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Margaret Guthrie Gibson; three children, Margaret Hauser (and husband, David) of Traverse City, Mich., Patricia Zimmerman (and husband, James) of Waterford and Nancy Voytek (and husband, Michael) of Huntsville, Ala; three grandchildren, Matthew and Patrick Voytek and Clay Hauser, and two step-grandchildren, Jamie and Brooke Zimmerman. There will be no funeral home visitation. Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service to be held 3 p.m. Monday in Latrobe Presbyterian Church, 428 Main St., Latrobe, with the church pastors officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at a reception in the Voglesang Room located in the lower level of the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the "Gibson Memorial," a newly established sports medicine fund to be used for the purchase of rehabilitation equipment in the fitness/training facility at the Greater Latrobe Senior High School.
