He was a devoted husband, proud father and loving grandfather. His faith in Jesus Christ was of greatest importance to him; he enjoyed sharing with others the hope and peace found in Jesus. George was born March 10, 1917, in Pleasant Unity, a son of the late Robert Edward and Anna (Susak) Goodman. He attended Latrobe High School. He served in the US Army during World War II. He drove a jeep from Utah Beach in Normandy, France, into the Harz Mountains of Germany with the Fourth Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron; he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. George married Lois in 1947, and they lived in Youngstown for 61 years, where they were members of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. George had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping trips in Pennsylvania and New England. He took many road trips to Maryland, Virginia and Texas to visit his sons. One of his favorite pastimes was exploring Pennsylvania country roads on his motorcycle. He retired in 1979 after 35 years at the Westinghouse Ceramic Insulator Plant in Derry. He loved his family, and visited his mother and siblings daily. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. In 2008, at 91, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, with Lois. He savored road trips throughout Alaska, long or short, winter or summer; he loved seeing moose and bears in the wild... and in his backyard. George kept in touch with Pennsylvania by following the Steelers and by making daily phone calls to family and friends back home. He enjoyed conversations with friends and with complete strangers. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Goodman, and sister Nellie Selembo. His sister Ruth Funk died on Jan. 25, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lois Ruth Karns Goodman of Anchorage; sons, Dr. David (Barbara) Goodman of Anchorage and Mark (Stephanie) Goodman of Morristown, Vermont; granddaughters, Erin (Aaron) Gibson of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Andrea Goodman of Anchorage; great-grandchildren, Audrey, Grady, Gavin, Tommy and Zarayah; sister Gladys Shultis of Lycippus, and several nieces and nephews. George lived a long and satisfying life, and was thankful for the life he was given. He was a good man, both in name and in heart. His family and friends will miss him. A Celebration of Life will occur at a later date at St. James Lutheran Church, Youngstown. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Trauger.
