Helfferich and father of Rex Helfferich, Scott Helfferich, Wren Shaulis and Buck Helfferich, died on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Barney came into this world on March 16, 1925, and was the fifth child born of Margaret Irma and Audley Helfferich. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; two brothers, Dale Helfferich and Shaler Helfferich, and two sisters, Dorothy Gregory and Hallie Helfferich. He served in the 780th U.S. Army Air Forces Base Unit in 1943 during World War II. Although his goal was to stay an airman during his enlistment, the Army soon discovered his ability to be a Morse code operator and transferred him to that division. He worked at Kennametal most of his life and retired after 35 years. He was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Unity Township and a member of F & AM Loyalhanna Lodge 275. Dolores and Barney met while singing in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church choir. They married on Sept. 16, 1950, and soon after decided to build their own stone home in Lawson Heights. They raised their family and resided there for 60 years. Barney enjoyed singing with Dolores in their Lutheran Church choirs and did so for 50 years. He also was an avid hunter and sportsman. His hunting buddy, Clair Casey, and he spent many happy years hunting the Pennsylvania woodlands. Barney is survived by his wife, Dolores; four children and their spouses, Louise (Rex's wife), Gina (Scott's wife), Guy (Wren's husband) and Lynn (Buck's wife); seven grandchildren, Jason, Brandi, Alina, Nicholas, Alex Joseph, Joshua. and Nathaniel; two step-grandchildren, Jacob and Danielle; four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Stacey, Ben and Amy, and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive callers from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Hartman-Graziano Funeral Home Inc., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with his pastor, the Rev. Bill Schaefer, officiating. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township.
